Which shamrock item from McDonalds is the best during March? The best item is said to be the Shamrock Shake when it comes out during these times. There is another item that many people overlook, which is the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. The two are very similar in taste and close in looks, but which is better? 

They are both good in flavor and have their iconic shamrock green color. The shake is great in flavor, but it is not what it used to be. The Shake’s flavor has changed for some people to taste more like liquid toothpaste than a tasty minty shake. The McFlurry is very green as well, but it is a little darker than the shake because of the Oreo chunks mixed in with vanilla and green dye.

The Shamrock Shake is the most festive item. It is also a foundation to the shamrock line up at McDonald’s. Gavin Brunner, ’27, says, “It’s franchise beverage.” Other people just like it for how it is. However, there are some who prefer the Oreo shamrock McFlurry.  

A form was sent out to St. Edward students and faculty, and the results really tell who prefer the new and not the old. The fairly new item, the Oreo shamrock shake, came out in 2020. There are more people who prefer this compared to the Shamrock Shake. 51% of the 44 people who answered preferred the McFlurry, while only 49% preferred the shake. Mariana Hernandez, ’26, prefers the texture and taste of the McFlurry over the shake and its dull flavor. 

No one is going to know which one is better until you try it. If you like texture and taste with a little crunch, have the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. If you like something classic, have the Shamrock shake. Whichever one you prefer, they are both great choices for a festive treat before St. Patrick’s Day.
