The joy in entertainment was through the roof when watching St. Edward High School take on the play production of The Play That Goes Wrong. I had much enjoyment while watching the show, and so did other audience members, as I heard nonstop laughing. I couldn’t help but laugh along with the rest of the audience throughout almost the entire performance.
The performers were on point when exaggerating emotion and character along with perfectly missing lines and cues, adding much more humor to their acting. With the show The Play That Goes Wrong, the intent was that the play goes wrong, but not in the embarrassing way that makes you cringe in your seat. There is humor behind the mistakes that are all part of the act. Some mistakes were created through sound, whether it was a microphone being left on, allowing you to hear the silly bickering backstage, or an exaggeration of sound effects and music playing. Other “wrong things” you could see happening before your eyes, such as people in the role of sound or tech moving about on stage, characters who were supposed to be dead moving around, or the improper use of props showing how silly the mistakes were. Even before the show started, the doors were open; the actors were in character. Characters interacted with the audience, asking questions with goofy responses and reactions. Because the show was a play inside a play, the show started its introduction with acting, already continuing the build of the show and what to expect to see.
Fellow audience member, Tomas Wade-Ramirez, ’29, said, “The play was great! The acting was surprisingly well-executed, and everyone played their roles well.” If I could, I would see this show again and maybe even a third time. I was proud to see how the show pulled through and was amazed with all the students participating in this hilarious play.
