The Hype about Black Friday

As Regina George once said, “Get in losers, we’re going shopping.” Whether we admit it or not, there is something really satisfying about adding fresh items to our closets and homes at the end of the day, until we check our bank accounts–yikes. Of course, any practical, or serial shopper, knows how to find the right deals and coupons in order to not break the bank. For these people, there’s one special day a year made just for them, Black Friday.

So, how did Black Friday start? There are many different stories on how this shopper-loving tradition came to be, but the most common one credits its origin to retailers. The story goes, that after an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would supposedly earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise.

This year, Black Friday is on November 23, 2018, the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday is traditionally the busiest shopping day out of the year because it kicks off the holiday season. In saying that, because Black Friday is so popular, things can get pretty hectic. Some shoppers will do almost anything for a good deal, and if you have social media you’ve probably seen some of the extremes people are willing to go through to get one. There is really no way to prevent the inevitable stampedes of people, so if you’re choosing to go shopping this upcoming Friday, remember to be careful and be safe.
