St. Edward accepts the Regional Championship plaque

Edge staffer and varsity girls basketball co-captain, junior Yssa Sto. Domingo was tired for good reason last Friday morning. She spent the evening celebrating the first regional title for St. Edward girls basketball since the 2010-11 season. They claimed the regional title Thursday night, after a 30 point slaughter of Guerin Prep High School, at the Gator’s gym. The team has a date in the sectional semi-final on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. back at Guerin Prep in River Grove.

Their record is currently 24-5. The team also brought home St. Edward’s first girls basketball conference title in approximately 30 years. The team was undefeated in conference play, and earned the top seed in the Class 2A Guerin Regional. The team has more wins and accomplishments than any girls squad since 2010-11.

Senior co-captain, Maddie Spagnola, (who surpassed 1,000 points in her career this season) spoke about the success coming, in part, from great team chemistry. “This team is really close. We’re like best friends instead of just teammates. Together, we focus on working as a team instead of individual successes. We believe that we can use our bond to make a deep postseason run.”

Balance in scoring and tenacious defense have been mainstays for the team this season. This high octane offense and pesky defense paved the way for a 12 game winning streak. After starting the season 2-3, the Lady Wave used that winning streak to spark a turnaround and have been 21-2 following the rough start. That impressive stretch included a surprising 66-38 domination of 4A South Elgin and several wins against other bigger schools in class 3A. The tough competition hasn’t fazed the Lady Wave yet, and they don’t plan to let up now.
