Thanksgiving Traditions

With Thanksgiving coming up so soon and being the second most popular holiday in the United States, I decided to create a survey and send it to some of the students to see how they celebrate the holiday. I asked questions like what they are most looking forward to, and what some of their favorite things are. I started off with what are your plans for Thanksgiving this year post-covid? (Black Friday shopping, getting together with family and friends, etc.) most people said that they were gonna be spending time with their families and friends and then going Black Friday shopping. When we asked this question to junior Lenore McBean said “that her family would be hosting Thanksgiving” and sophomore Taylor Petruczenko said, “she is currently planning on getting together with her entire family at her grandma’s since they were unable to last year.” Junior Isla Oesterlin says, “eating food with my family.”

Then we asked what their favorite Thanksgiving food is and the majority said pie, a few said stuffing, ham, mashed potatoes, and turkey. Sophomore Joseph Lee says that “his favorite is cranberry.”

Then we asked what their favorite thing about Thanksgiving is and junior Stephanie DeWitt says “My favorite thing about celebrating Thanksgiving is preparing the food to bring with my Mom, I also like being able to see my grandparents and spend time with them.” Senior Jianna Birns says “getting to see all my family,” junior Joseph Johnson says “eating food,” and junior Ava Pfeiffer says her favorite things are “food, family, and shopping.”

If they had any specific holiday traditions or memories or where they were going for the holiday, most people said just going over to grandparents’ house. When asked junior Drew Pemberton said, “I go to my grandparent’s house but I enjoy being outdoors for Thanksgiving because of all the pretty leaves and colors it just makes it a whole vibe.” Junior Kara Michonski says her favorite memory is “waking up every Thanksgiving to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and then getting to help my mom cook then going to my grandparents.” Senior Lily Burger says a tradition that they always do is “we have to use this one specific pink tablecloth I have no idea why but there have been arguments over why we have to use the pink tablecloth.”
