Teeing off with Varsity Girls Golf
October 29, 2021
Varsity Girls Golf came back in full swing this year for the 2021 season! The team worked with a new coach this year, Paul Netzel, in order to hone in on their skills from previous years. Coach Netzel created goals for each of the girls to get a consistent score on each hole and worked individually with them to make them more rounded players. The team saw two new players join this year, freshman Addison Gillie and senior Kelly Hancock. Addison was happy to be a part of a new sport this year and said, “It was really cool to try something new and see all the different golf courses.” In highlights for this year, junior Ivy Burnett made it to sectionals after coming in 7th place overall at regionals. At sectionals, Ivy was put into a sudden death round to qualify for going to state but ultimately lost by one stroke to advance. The girls on the team were super proud of Ivy’s accomplishments this season and are excited to see what she does next season!
The two seniors for this season were Lily Burger and Kelly Hancock. Lily has enjoyed playing on the team for all four years and was excited to be team captain. Lily’s favorite memory was Kelly falling into the sand trap with her clubs because Lily couldn’t stop laughing when her teammates told her about Kelly’s fall. Her advice for her teammates is: “Take a deep breath and clear your head before you swing.” Kelly joined the team this year after Lily convinced her to do it for fun. She had never played golf before but improved a lot over the season and has a newfound love for the sport. She said her favorite memory from this year was getting last place at the regional tournament and her teammates chanting “Last Place!” when they found out. Kelly’s advice to the team is: “Relax, have fun, and take each shot one at a time.” Both girls were happy to have a fun season and wish their teammates the best of luck next year!
