Recounting the Wave’s Way to Success

After third place finish in the IHSA Class A State Final last fall and a 2016 Super-Sectional appearance, the St. Edward soccer program has its eyes on the prize again this year. The Green Wave is currently 11-1-1. While it seems like the recent success has came out of nowhere, it has been brewing for awhile.

Many of the St. Edward soccer players have been playing together since their elementary days. Carson Scarnegie who commented about what really started the wins to pile up he said, “When AJ [Franklin – St. Edward standout now playing men’s soccer at Marquette] started to take off it motivated the rest of the team to play better as a unit.” The team began to click at the perfect time last year and the chemistry seems to have continued. They play for the Pepsico Challenge (a national tournament) championship in their bracket this weekend.

After playing in the Herscher Tournament against top level teams, the team had a realization. “After the Herscher Tournament, we beat a bunch of top level teams and had a lot of momentum; we realized we were state contenders,” continued Scarnegie. When asked if the team could surpass the famous 2017 team, who set a school record with 27-2 wins he replied, “We’re are going to have to work so much harder, not having a guy up top like AJ hurts us a little, but I can easily see us getting to state if not winning the whole thing.”

Hopefully, the team is going to continue to thrive and win games; it will be a true joy to see how far the boys in green and gold can go this year.
