St. Edward just announced that there will be a boys tennis team this spring and a girls tennis team next fall! Many students have shown interest in creating a tennis team over the past couple years. The last time St. Edward had a boys team was back in 2019; a competitive team was ready in 2020 but got disbanded due to Covid, and it never returned. There has not been a girls tennis team since 2015.
Alumna Rosa Valdez, ’07, is the new head coach for both boys and girls tennis. She played tennis all four years at St. Edward, going downstate her senior year and finishing out 4th. Valdez continued her academic and athletic career at Bethel University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. “Coming back to St. Edward is such a blessing; I had a great time at this school. It created so many great memories and taught me so many lessons,” Valdez reflected. “I am so glad I will be able to give back to my school and share the love of tennis just like St. Edward Girls Tennis did for me.”
Several students expressed their excitement for the return of this sport. “I am so excited to start the season and work out all summer long,” said Sophia Tranchitella, ’26. “I am excited to start this new thing at St. Edward. I am looking forward to recruiting underclassmen.” Girls Tennis unfortunately won’t be around until next year, but we already have so much interest from many students. Lucas Buckardt, ‘26, captain of the boys team this year, says, “This is a good opportunity to stay in shape before going back to training in the summer for football. I’m so glad Coach Valdez recruited me this year; I really enjoy the sport so far.”
This is such a marvelous addition to St. Edward sports. We are all so excited to see what they will be able to accomplish in the future.
