Spring break is a great time to explore new places or try new things because it doesn’t only have to be about traveling to a luxurious resort or sitting on an uncomfortable plane for four hours. You can always find new things to do near you or around town, so let me help you plan your perfect vacation day.
Spring is the perfect time to enjoy nature as the weather warms up and flowers begin to bloom. You can visit a local park or nature reserve for hiking, picnicking, or simply taking in the fresh air. If you don’t mind making a bit of a drive, you can always visit Lake Geneva, Patoka Lake, Lake Michigan or Three Oaks Recreation in Crystal Lake. Three Oaks offers kayaking, paddleboarding, etc. Although Three Oaks requires you to buy passes for non-residents, it is still a beautiful sight and a great place to go whether it’s with your friends or family.
Downtown Chicago is a great place to visit during spring break. There are endless things to do in Chicago and I can guarantee that you haven’t seen many of the historical or famous landmarks. Walking or bike riding along Lake Michigan is a beautiful experience and a perfect picture spot. If you are a big shopping person, Michigan Avenue and State Street are two destinations that are worth visiting. “It’s lit and we are all fam at Michigan Avenue”, said Holly Thomason, ’25. Besides spending time by the lake and shopping, museums and theaters are other popular places that you can visit. Be sure to be on the lookout for free admission days because these places can get pricey. Navy Pier is a classic Chicago stop that almost every tourist goes to. They have shops, food, boat rides, and many more activities. The Ferris Wheel includes a beautiful view of Lake Michigan, and it is worth going at least once in your lifetime.
Trying new hobbies can be relaxing and can strengthen your mental and physical health. Painting or drawing with music can allow you to unstress and take a break from everything that is going on around you. If cooking and baking is your thing, learn a new recipe and take this time to perfect it or make new treats to share with your loved ones. Organizing and cleaning is another great thing you can do if you are bored or feel like you want to see a change. There is no better feeling than coming home to a clean house or room, so get to it!
Spring break doesn’t only have to be about faraway destinations or expensive trips. Trying new things close by not only saves you money; it also allows you to discover new places that you love. Take the time to meet new people or hang out with friends that make you happy because spring break is to help you relax and enjoy the warm weather.
