One of the biggest achievements you could have in your high school basketball career is scoring 1,000 plus points. This season, St. Edward had two athletes, sophomore Savannah Lynch, ’27, and senior Matthew Morrice, ’25 , successfully score their 1,000th point.
On January 11th, Savannah Lynch grabbed the defensive rebound and raced down the court for a wide open layup, successfully scoring her 1,000th career point against Larkin High School. “I was keeping count but my count was off 100 points,” said the sophomore guard. “My dad purposely told me I was off 100 points, so I was confused why everyone was jumping up and down; it’s only half time.” Savannah has been playing basketball since kindergarten. She scored 1,000 points in fifty-three games, averaging out to 18.86 points per game. When asked which players she looks up to, she said “For women’s pro, Sue Bird because she’s a small guard and learned how to affect the game. Currently for women’s college basketball, I’d say Olivia Myles because she gets her teammates involved a lot.”
The Lady Green Wave have a winning record, currently 16 and 6. “[As a team] our decision-making causes us to have unnecessary turnovers that can cost us our game.” Before every game, Savannah focuses on getting into the right mindset with music and pre-game Tik Toks. Savannah’s biggest challenges this season are “figuring out how to move without the basketball, making the right cuts, and making the right reads on certain defenders.”
On the Boys Green Wave side, Matthew Morrice scored his 1,000th point earlier in the season against Westminster Christian on November 29th, 2024. “When I was 1 or 2 points away, Cooper told me ‘Oh you’re right there, you’re right there.’ I was like into the game, I didn’t even think about it, and then when it happened I was like, ‘Oh dang, I actually got it!’” Against Westminster Christian, Matthew scored 28 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and had 7 assists. Throughout the game, his teammates were able to constantly set him up for open drives and layups to the basket. “It was a great milestone for me, but a great achievement for my team because they put me in a position so I could get those 1,000 points.”
St. Edward Boys Basketball are currently 9 and 11. “This season we are a little bit undersized so it’s a challenge when we play bigs [bigger players] and it’s also a challenge to play zones too because when a lot of bigger teams play zones, it’s hard to play through,” Morrice reflected. “But we’ll work on getting through it and I believe we could do it.” The boys are 2-2 in the Chicagoland Christian Conference, making them 5th in their conference.
St. Edwards has a history of student athletes scoring 1,000 points in the last two decades. Here are some notable alumni who scored their 1,000th point for the Green Wave:
- Katie Yohn (’10)
- Maddie Kerr (’11)
- Kelvin Cortez-Harvey (’17)
- Maddie Spagnola (’17)
- Brook Biggins (’22)
- Kaden Dawson (’24)
Katie Yohn, ’10, is the current record holder for points scored at St. Edward, and finished her career with 1,812 points. She continued her basketball career at Bradley University, shattering more records. Maddie Spagnola, ’17, also continued her basketball career at Quincy University, starting all twenty-seven games her sophomore year in college, leading the team with an average minutes of 29.1 and in points averaging 12.4 points per game. Kelvin Cortez-Harvey, ’17, played at Elgin Community College for two years, successfully also scoring 1,000 points there as well. He later committed to Roosevelt University. Kaden Dawson, ’24, is currently in his freshman season at Carthage College.
Scoring 1,000 points is certainly not easy, so St. Edward is proud to have so many athletes who achieved this landmark in their time here. These two current athletes are having a great year so far and we are excited to see them finish the last stretch of the season.
