With the season of Lent being in full swing, meat is considered a “no-no” on Fridays. Luckily, the Green Wave Student Media (Jack Cozzi) has reviewed five different fish sandwiches from five different local fast-food restaurants. I tried them from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Popeye’s, Burger King, and Arby’s. I gave each of them an honest review, as I have a fair palette on food. Here is my list of which sandwiches you need to give a try this season of Lent, and which ones to stay away from.
The first sandwich that I tried was the Wendy’s panko crusted fish sandwich. I did not mind this one, it was the baseline for all fish sandwiches. It had solid crisp and nice additions like pickles and mayonnaise. I liked this one. The second sandwich that I tried was Burger King’s Big Fish. This one was a little underwhelming. It was not bad, but it was not good. It was rather “bland,” if you will. There was not much sauce, which made the sandwich a little dry. Therefore, it fell right under the Wendy’s sandwich.
The next sandwich that I tried was Arby’s sandwich. This sandwich was the crème de la crème of fish sandwiches. It had everything I wanted in a fish sandwich. It had sauce, cheese, shredded lettuce, and a nice sesame seed bun. The taste was delectable, as all the elements meshed and created a great symphony of flavor. Arby’s seems to get a bad rap, and it is really a shame because personally, they make fairly tasty food. Overall, Arby’s sandwich stands alone at the top in my rankings. Then, I tried the Popeye’s flounder fish sandwich. You can get this one either regular or spicy. I got regular so I could be fair to the people out there with a more sensitive palette. This sandwich was sufficient in terms of presentation. The fish was crispy, the pickles were crunchy; however, it was lacking sauce. Because of its lack of sauce, it made the sandwich a little dry. But the fish was very delectable, which evened out the lack of sauce. That said, the Popeye’s flounder sandwich falls right behind Arby’s.
Lastly, I reviewed the All-American Classic, Filet-O-Fish. For many years, there has always been a rave about McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish. However, I was extremely disappointed with this one. The presentation was horrible, as the fish and cheese were not properly aligned with the bun. The bun itself was also incredibly sad and doughy. There was an excess amount of sauce, and it was not distributed properly among the buns. And for the cherry on top, they also messed up my order for the first time around – seriously!? The Filet-O-Fish will fall dead last in my rankings.
Now that it is all said and done, if you are looking for a good fish sandwich, consider taking a trip to Arby’s. I was thoroughly impressed with what they had to offer. As for the rest of the restaurants, do better.
