Looking Back at Winter Sport
St. Edwards sports outstanding seasons this winter. A few highlights include the boys’ basketball team winning their regional games, the competition cheer team going to state, and much more.
Wrestling:
This year the St. Edwards wrestling club was brought back as an official IHSA recognized sport. The team was led by coaches: Roy Pena, Nathan Negron, Michael Savini, and team manager Sophia Savini ‘26. Dom Savini ’24 had a breakout season. He ended with a 20-4 record and was the regional champion. When Dom was asked about his season he said, “I think the wrestling season went well. Everybody learned a lot and put their all into it. Regionals was a solid tournament; I took 1st place. I felt like I was able to teach the other kids a lot of things on and off the mat and lessons that they will never forget.” Both underclassmen Tristan Menendez ‘26 and Will Foley ’26 had a great first season as well. Will Foley quoted, “Success in wrestling is not determined by the number of wins, but by the number of times, you get back up after being knocked down.” This wrestling season has shown that St. Edward is a top competitor and in time will be state champions without a doubt.
Boys Bowling:
The St. Edwards boys’ bowling team was led by coaches Erv Gernard and Jerry Kublank. Seniors: Drew Ramos, Jack Cozzi, and Josh Avila had an outstanding season. They were able to win matches over schools like Larkin and Christ the King. Drew Ramos commented, “Coach Erv did a very good job this year for having such little to work with.” Despite this year’s roster being so small all participants on the team were able to have a good time and give other schools a run for their money.
Girls Bowling:
The girls’ bowling team was also led by coaches Erv Gernard and Jerry Kublank. There were many individual accolades on this team. Sophie Holland ’26 was awarded MVP, Taylor Kapetan ‘26 bowled a series of 423, Kendall Ingoglia ‘27 bowled a series of 393 against Burlington, and Emma Devoll ’26 had season high of 174 in one game. Coach Erv commented, “The good things were first and foremost, we seemed to really care about each other and get along exceptionally well. All girls improved, not every day, but over the season.” When freshman Kendall Ingoglia was asked for a comment on her season she said, “I feel my first high school bowling season went well even though we didn’t win all the games. I improved a lot throughout the season and my team did as well.”
Competition Cheer:
The St. Edward Competition Cheerleading team had an outstanding year. The team only consisted of 5 girls, which did not compare to the other schools who had 10 or more cheerleaders. Despite this, the team was able to place 5th in sectionals and make it down to state for the 7th consecutive year. They were the only team of 5 to qualify for state in the small division. Senior Lucy Foy commented, “I am so happy to spend my last season with such wonderful and talented girls. I am so proud of how well we did.” The hard work and perseverance from everyone on the cheer team this year was incredible. They were always the underdogs yet were still able to have a very successful season and accomplish many things.
Boys Basketball:
The boys’ basketball team had yet another successful season led by coaches: Andy Zielinski, Mike Aydt, Michael Kelly, and Nick Gairpay. They finished their season off with a record of 14-17 and made a run-in regional by winning their first 2 games. When Kaden Dawson ‘24 was asked to share his thoughts on the season he said, “It was disappointment to not win regionals, but there were many great moments in the season I will always remember. Winning on senior night, playing with friends, and scoring 1000 points were some of the highlights of the season. We gave it a good shot and I have no regrets over my four years. I gave it everything I had, and I hope I was able to make a positive imprint on the younger players. Hopefully they can get some revenge on Harvest next season.” Despite losing the regional championship game, one of the more notable accomplishments by the team was when they upset Wheaton Academy 67-59 after everyone had assumed they would lose. It was a great season for the team and next year they will be back and ready to win that regional championship.
Girls Basketball:
The girls’ basketball team was very impressive this year. They were led by coaches; Michelle Dawson, Roxanne Leadley, and Jessica Leist. The team captains included Maggie Jarzemsky ‘25, and Madeline Sasis ‘25. They finished their season with an 18-14 record and some notable achievements include placing 1st in the Elgin City Classic Tournament and winning the regional championship. Savannah Lynch ‘27 was named to all tournament teams at the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament and the Lisle Christmas Tournament. Morgan Lutzow ’24 commented, “While the season didn’t end up how we wanted to, I’m so proud of everyone on the team. Our growth as players and a team was impeccable.” It was an outstanding season for the girls and there are bigger and better things to come with this team.
Math Team:
St. Edward Academic sports teams have performed very well. The math team was led by coach Ms. Buehler and team captains Robert Sommer ’25 and Joshua Pottorff ’24. The team ended up placing 16th in state out of 68 other teams. Erica Scheider ‘27 placed 7th in the Algebra 1 competition, Robert Sommer placed 4th in the Algebra 2 competition, and Cadence Joseph 25’ placed 6th in the Algebra 2 competition. Joshua Pottorff and Jeremiah Roldan ’24 both tied for 2nd in the pre-calculus competition. All 5 of these participants qualified for state along with Annabelle Deang ‘26, Will Foley ‘26, Sophie Holland ‘26, Sophia Savin ‘26, Joshua Schelonka ‘24, Lauren Menendez ‘24, Azel Mangoba ‘24, and Natalie Resendiz ‘24
Scholastic Bowl:
St. Edward scholastic bowl was led by coaches Mr. Kohls and Ms. Page. Notable members included Jeremiah Roldan ’24, Josh Schelonka ’24, and Matthew Tulgar ’25. Matthew Tulgar had 12 total “Powers” (scores for additional points) which was 5th best in the conference. Mr. Kohls commented, “We had a strong core of team members, and some very promising freshmen prospects. We were never under the illusion that we would go undefeated, and clear growth can be seen from the beginning of the year to the end.” The scholastic bowl season is still not over, and the team is currently sitting at a record of 7-9. Hopefully the team can close out the season with a few more wins!
