After a few unanticipated delays, the spring musical is confirmed. The plan was for the musical to be Godspell, but due to a lack of performers, the musical was to be cancelled altogether. This cancellation was reconsidered, and the musical is up and running again. Fortunately, the musical is official and it is going to be… High School Musical! There are many exciting things to look forward to for the show this spring.
The story of High School Musical follows star basketball player, Troy Bolton, and the academically gifted Gabriella Montez. They decide to branch out of their comfort zones and audition for their school’s musical. After they are both given their roles, these two drastically different students form a friendship, leading to the disruption of the status quo of East High.
Sophia Reich, ’25, will be playing the role of one of the main characters, Troy Bolton. When asked what she is excited about for the production, Sophia said, “I am looking forward to working with new people. The last school production I participated in was Clue and the majority of the cast were seniors or did not audition for HSM.” Some of the other cast members include Alexa Griffin, ’25, playing Gabriella Montez, Sofia Gonzalez, ’27, playing Ryan Evans and Holly Thomason, ’25, playing Sharpay Evans.
Student director and stage manager, Lilly West, ’24, is also looking forward to the production of this musical. Lilly looks ahead to the musical when she says, “It will be a fun and interesting challenge to dive into the characters and make our own choices! As much as we love and admire the film, we are artists who still want to take our own spin on it.” When asked what is special about High School Musical in particular, she explained, “High School Musical is a show that makes everyone feel seen. We are taught that we can only be one thing, but High School Musical preaches acceptance, tolerance, and expanding new horizons. We are also incredibly fortunate that our cast and crew are the embodiment of these values. As actors run from rehearsal to soccer practice, they are living the idea of forging your own path and breaking the status quo.”
This musical is surely something to be looking forward to for the cast, crew, and the audience. Be sure to show your support and come see the performance of High School Musical on April 19th, 20th, and 21st at St. Edward!
