Americans around the country are enthusiastic about the Super Bowl that is coming up February 11, 2024. Some are very disappointed about how the conference championships went and some are ecstatic. With both teams having a dominant regular season despite playing tough teams, Super Bowl LVIII is looking like it’s going to be very interesting.
The San Francisco 49ers had an outstanding 12-5 regular season with big wins over the Eagles and the Cowboys. In the playoffs, they defeated the Green Bay Packers 21-17 to advance to the NFC Conference Championship and defeated the Detroit Lions 34-31 to advance to the Super Bowl. They are led by sophomore quarterback and leader Brock Purdy who had a major breakout season. With veteran running back Christian McCaffrey and dominant tight end George Kittle, the offensive side of the 49ers is unstoppable but that’s not where it ends. As well as an elite offense, the 49ers have a great defense that is arguably the best in the league. The 49ers’ defense is led by star linebacker Fred Warner who set a franchise record with 13 tackles in the NFC Championship win over the Detroit Lions. They also have one the best edge rushing duos in the league, with Nick Bosa and Chase Young, as the 49ers were top ten in the league in sacks. They were a tough team to beat all season long and it will be just as hard on Super Bowl Sunday for the Kanas City Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs had an up-and-down regular season that ended with a 10-7 record. The Chiefs struggled at times unlike their performances in the past. Even though Kanas City won their division, people had low expectations for them come playoff time. Led by potential future Hall of Fame coach Andy Reid and players Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, we should have known better. They defeated the Miami Dolphins at home to advance to the Divisional Round, but legendary quarterback Patrick Mahomes played a playoff game for the first time in his NFL career. They faced off against the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo, which is a tall task for any NFL quarterback. But he led the Chiefs to a 27-24 victory in a thrilling game that shocked the entire league. They went on the road again in Baltimore to play the team with the best record in football, the 13-4 Baltimore Ravens. The Kansas City Chiefs once again defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10. Will the Chiefs carry the late season momentum into the Super Bowl and win their 3rd Super Bowl in 5 years, or will the 49ers put an end to their late season run and win their 1st Super Bowl since 1995? St. Edward senior, Josh Rosland thinks not, stating “Patrick Mahomes will beat Mr. Irrelevant”.
Interestingly enough, this is not the first time the Chiefs and 49ers have played in the Super Bowl. In fact, they played each other 4 years ago in Super Bowl LIV. The Kanas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in a thriller. The game came down to the last few minutes, but a late Chiefs touchdown sealed the win. In the last 4 years, a lot has changed since. The 49ers have a different quarterback, Brock Purdy, letting go of Jimmy Garoppolo. They also now have league MVP Candidate, Christian McCaffery who played for the Carolina Panthers during Super Bowl LIV kicked off. As for the Chiefs, they lost star receiver, Tyreke Hill who came up with a big win in their Super Bowl win against the 49ers. NFL fans are thrilled to see if these changes to the teams will be enough to change the outcome of their last Super Bowl.
