Travis Scott’s fourth studio album was released in July 2023. If UTOPIA truly is the perfect imaginary place, then Travis Scott’s new album would be the perfect choice to be played nonstop on a golden turntable. “Utopia is something that people feel is so far-fetched and out of reach, some perfect state of mind. But you create it yourself. There are people who achieve Utopia every day,” Travis Scott said. One of the most popular songs on the album is MELTDOWN (Ft. Drake). The lyrics express tension and power. Drake’s verse criticizes others for being too fragile and hypocrisy. With 19 songs on the album, it makes the listener feel as if they are at a Travis Scott concert. This album is ambitious and crosses many genres.
Olivia Rodrigo came out with her sophomore album GUTS in September 2023. GUTS is a true non skip album; each song is like a piece of Olivia’s heart being torn out. Her lead single “Vampire” debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Olivia Rodrigo’s storytelling grabs you in and keeps you close until the final note. In a fast-paced world of dishonest people trying to get ahead, Olivia brings her listener’s comfort. It reminds me of the old Christmas song,; her music not only delivers comfort but Comfort and Joy.
In October 2023, Drake dropped his eighth studio album For All the Dogs. There were many features on this album including SZA, 21 Savage, Bad Bunny, Lil Yachty and more. Hearing both Drake and Yachty deliver a bitter rap over the groovy instrumental, “Another Late Night” is the product of a friendship that’s lasted years between the two rappers. I felt like this album was easy to listen to as all the songs had a great beat.
Boys of Faith by Zach Bryan was released in September 2023. I would say that Zach Bryan is one of the most popular country artists, as some people who don’t even listen to country, know his name. This album got a lot of love, so I was looking forward to reviewing it. Every song had a deeper meaning to it that really made you think. “Summertime’s Close” was one of my favorites on the album. You could tell he was really pouring his heart out. Another one of my favorites was “I Remember Everything” (feat. Kacey Musgraves). It is such a beautiful song, lyrical and instrumental. I usually don’t listen to country, but this album was so creative and passionately written.
