Just a little bit of kryptonite could ruin Superman’s powers and Popeye without his spinach would definitely drain his powers. The one person who will always be able to keep his powers is Mr. Powers because the name says it all. Mr. Powers has only been at St. Edward for just over two months, but he’s made the most of his time through building positive relationships with the students. I recently interviewed Mr. Powers and he had so many positive things to say about our little piece of higher learning heaven just west of the mighty Fox River. “I have never worked a day in my life because teaching isn’t work to me, it’s a passion. Interacting and helping students is something that I love to do.”
Outside of teaching, Mr. Powers enjoys music and going to concerts. You probably won’t see him in the mosh pit or stage diving at a Drake or Travis Scott concert; he is more into classic rock. His life has traveled the Long and Winding Road which has led him to four Paul McCartney concerts which probably made him Twist and Shout. He also listens to Rolling Stones albums, which he says he keeps “Under My Thumb.” His favorite vacation destinations are Jackson Hole in Wyoming and Yellowstone. He highly recommends watching A Haunting in Venice. And being a die-hard Cubs fan can be difficult for Mr. Powers since the Cubs have had more ups and downs than an abandoned Yo-Yo Factory.
Big things often have small beginnings and Mr. Powers enjoys the small school atmosphere that St. Edward provides. “Small class sizes give me the opportunity to really get to know the students,” Mr. Powers added. He’s looking forward to engaging his students with current events.
Mr. Powers feeds off his students and their enthusiasm. If Mr. Powers were to talk to himself, he would say, “What can I do today that will get the students excited to learn.” The excitement exudes from his classroom, students enjoy his positive energy and his genuineness, and his global approach is just what this world needs.
