It was a big weekend for the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. Both Kelvin Cortez and Maddie Spagnola scored their 1000th point with the Green Wave. Cortez scored his 1000th point on his last basket of the game against Westminster on Friday night. The Wave fell to Westminster 59-51 in the Westminster Thanksgiving Tournament. “I knew the number, but I was more concerned with winning the game, it means a lot to play three years and get a thousand,” Cortez told the Chicago Tribune.
Spagnola scored her 1000th point against Oak Park-River in a 46-40 loss. She is the 14th player to score 1,000 points in Lady Wave basketball history. “It means a lot to me,” Spagnola said to the Daily Herald. “I’ve got such great teammates and coaches who always encourage me and it means a lot to St. Ed’s too.”
